Miers Nomination Bring Praise From Both Parties

Miers Nomination Bring Praise From Both Parties
President Bush s nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court received heavy bipartisan praise yesterday, indicating that Miers confirmation could be another smooth one.  The Washington Post quoted several key Republicans this morning: My conversations with Harriet Miers indicate that she is a first-rate lawyer and a fine person, said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), one of the committee's most conservative members. Her legal skills are proven, and her reputation throughout the legal community is excellent. Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.), another committee Republican, said Bush has made a solid pick for the Supreme Court. Several democrats were optimistic about the nomination as well.  The Washington Post quotes Senator Harry Reid as saying "I have to say without any qualification that I'm very happy that we have someone like her. The Washington Post reports that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) applauded the President Bush s decision as well, calling Miers another outstanding nominee.

In Case You Missed It: Attacks On Roberts Badly Miss Their Marks

In Case You Missed It: Attacks On Roberts Badly Miss Their Marks
From The Mobile Register EditorialAugust 10, 2005 EVEN WITH the assistance of sloppy reporting from major newspapers, some leftist groups' increasingly desperate attempts to smear Supreme Court nominee John Roberts are, so far, meeting with well-deserved failure. The big-money political left has tried to trip up Judge Roberts on the subjects of abortion, his Catholic faith, his adoption of two children, the withholding of internal memos he wrote for the solicitor general's office, and most recently on civil rights. Each attack has been baseless.

Ensure Confirmation

Ensure Confirmation
Tonight, President Bush made one of the most important announcements of his Presidency: his nomination of Judge John G. Roberts Jr. to be a United States Supreme Court Justice. Judge Roberts is a highly qualified man with sterling judicial credentials.  He is fair-minded and compassionate and understands his job is to faithfully interpret the Constitution, not to legislate from the bench. President Bush selected Judge Roberts after an unprecedented outreach effort, consulting with Democrats and Republicans alike. He has been thorough, thoughtful and deliberate throughout the entire process. Now he needs your help. To ensure Judge Roberts is confirmed by the U.S. Senate, I need you to do three things. 1. Call your senators, tell them Roberts has your support and deserves theirs. 2. Sign our petition in support of the timely confirmation of Judge Roberts. 3. Call talk radio, write a letter to the editor of your local paper and tell your friends and neighbors why you support the President's choice. Judge Roberts has a record that demonstrates a commitment to faithfully applying the Constitution and not legislating from the bench. The bottom line is the President needs your help. By taking the actions above, your elected officials, your party and your friends, family, and neighbors will know you stand with the President in support of this outstanding nominee. It is imperative you do all you can to help Judge Roberts become the next Supreme Court Justice. Thank you for all your hard work.

Friends And Colleagues Offer Insight Into Miers Skill And Spirit

Friends And Colleagues Offer Insight Into Miers Skill And Spirit
It is clear that Supreme Court Justice Nominee Harriet Miers has the president s utmost confidence and trust.  Now numerous prestigious acquaintances of Miers are speaking in overwhelming support of her as well. The New York Times reports today the qualities that Ms. Miers is known for are quiet, tenacious determination; attention to detail; and a genteel manner, lawyers who have worked with her and those who have opposed her said. The article goes on to quote Darrell E. Jordan, managing partner of Godwin Gruber, a Dallas law firm, as saying Miers is Very precise and disciplined And she would, I think, work hard not to exaggerate or to tell you something she couldn't absolutely back up." In a story yesterday, Washington Post writer David S. Broder interviews Leonard Leo about Miers, saying Leo spoke as one who has known and worked with her for well over a decade and -- perhaps most significant -- who joined her in a battle to get the American Bar Association to rescind its resolution endorsing Roe v. Wade, the decision establishing a right to abortion. Leo said Miers believes in legal rules, that law has a content to it. She is not one who would vacillate back and forth in a world of murky standards.

Women for Roberts, Chamber of Commerce Speak Out

Women for Roberts, Chamber of Commerce Speak Out
Judge John Roberts is receiving support from people across demographic, geographic and ideological lines - that's because he's a fair-minded judge who is undoubtedly qualified for the Supreme Court bench. Here s more on those who are expressing their support: The Washington Post reports this morning that more than "a dozen conservative activists and commentators" who make up the group Women for Roberts met yesterday to counter "'feminists on the left'" who "have distorted the nominee's quarter-century-long paper trail to cast him as hostile to equality for women." And Reuters reports on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce s endorsement of Roberts. The Chamber, a pro-business institution, said "Roberts would bring vital experience advocating for the nation's leading businesses if he is confirmed to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor...'Roberts has attracted broad, bipartisan support for his fairness, keen intellect, open-mindedness and judicious practice of the law,' said chamber President Thomas Donohue. 'He is highly regarded and well respected by the legal and business communities.'"

NARAL Ads On Roberts False And Misleading

NARAL Ads On Roberts False And Misleading
NARAL Pro-Choice America s ad targeting Judge Roberts nomination drew fire from the nonpartisan group Factcheck.org for its false and misleading attacks. NARAL Pro-Choice America "launched the first major attack yesterday" on Roberts nomination, Long Island Newsday reports. As "a $500,000 television ad campaign against Roberts began running, the groups charged that Roberts demonstrated anti-abortion views in arguments he made as a government lawyer in a Supreme Court case on abortion clinic protests in the early 1990s." The Washington Times adds that conservatives "say pro-choice groups such as NARAL Pro-Choice America are distorting Judge Roberts' record to make it appear he condones violence outside abortion clinics when he has stated that he doesn't." Wendy Wright, senior policy director for Concerned Women for America, said, "The use of such outrageous accusations reveals how desperate NARAL is to smear a good man. This says a lot more about [abortion-rights proponents] than about John Roberts." And meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal opines this morning that the NARAL ad may backfire. "The ad practically screams: We're so desperate to find something to pin on John Roberts that we're not above making things up," the Journal writes.

Roberts Gains Support of Judiciary Committee s Senior Democrat

Roberts Gains Support of Judiciary Committee s Senior Democrat
Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont announced his support of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court nominee John Roberts after meeting with President Bush yesterday. I know this won't be popular with many of my constituents, the senior Democrat said in an interview with the New York Times.  But I really didn't come here to win a popularity contest. Senator Leahy praised Roberts as a man of integrity in his speech on the senate floor.Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) and Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) both announced their support of Roberts this morning.  Kohl cited Roberts distinguished career and his sterling reputation as a lawyer and a judge as the reasons he would vote to confirm the nominee. Other Senate democrats came out in support of Roberts yesterday, including Senators Max Baucus of Montana and Tim Johnson of South Dakota.

Cross-Country Support for Roberts as Chief Justice

Cross-Country Support for Roberts as Chief Justice
Today, a swell of editorials from around the country express support for Judge John Roberts' nomination for U.S. Supreme Court Justice, highlighting his stellar qualifications. The Birmingham (AL) News says, "Barring any last-minute surprises, there's no reason to believe Roberts wouldn't make an outstanding justice. Nor is there reason to believe Roberts wouldn't make an outstanding chief justice. It would be fitting for him to take the place on the court of his mentor and the justice for whom he clerked." From The Virginian-Pilot: "Congress should move with the same dispatch to debate the credentials of John G. Roberts Jr., and, barring an unforeseen revelation, confirm him as the nation's 17th chief justice ... Roberts has shown himself to be brilliant yet humble, dignified yet collegial, conservative yet not entirely predictable. He is both knowledgeable about and highly respectful of the traditions of the court." And the Lincoln Journal (NE) Star reports that Nebraska Sens. Chuck Hagel and Ben Nelson appear "to be on course to support the nomination of John Roberts" for Chief Justice. "Nelson said he sees 'no smoking gun or other disqualifying information' standing in the way of his likely support," and "Hagel was unequivocal. 'I will enthusiastically support and vote to confirm John Roberts'" he said.

Test for Colorado`s Democrat Senator

Test for Colorado`s Democrat Senator
When the nomination of Judge John Roberts comes up for a vote, it will be a moment of truth for Democrat Senators who in the past promised not to vote solely along party lines. Colorado Springs Gazette reports that RNC Chairman Ken Mehlman "urged Colorado Springs residents this week to bombard" Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar (D) "with reminders to back Supreme Court nominee John Roberts." The Gazette notes Salazar "was part of the 'Gang of 14,' moderate senators who agreed Democrats would not filibuster to block nominations of judges unless they are extremists. Mehlman said now is a chance for Coloradoans to call the senator and remind him of his promise not to vote solely along party lines. 'Tell Senator Salazar this is one test to tell if he is a new kind of Democrat,' Mehlman said Friday." Join the effort! Sign the petition in support of a timely confirmation for Judge John Roberts.

Biden Hypocritical In Opposition To Alito On Fox News Sunday

Biden Hypocritical In Opposition To Alito

On Fox News Sunday Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE) said of Judge Samuel Alito "clearly, clearly, you'll find a lot of people, including me, willing to do whatever they can to keep him off the court."  Biden was upset over Alito s dissagreement with the 1962 Supreme Court case Baker vs. Carr, which Alito expressed in a 1985 job application.

Biden should be careful with his words, as a Washington Times Op-Ed points out this morning.  John R. Lott Jr. writes If Mr. Biden carries through on his threat, it might result in the opposite of what he intends: Instead of embarrassing Judge Alito, such questioning may actually show Americans how much the Supreme Court has made up its own laws.

Lott is referring to the activist role the liberal Warren Court took in deciding Baker vs. Carr, saying that this decision (which established the principle of one man, one vote ) would have shocked the authors of the 14th Amendment.

Lott writes After all, did Mr. Biden ever put forward legislation to stop the unfair practice of giving Delaware and other small population states overrepresentation in the Senate? It will be interesting to see how he attacks Judge Alito without facing such obvious hypocrisy.

PFAW s Predictable Smear Campaign The fact that far left groups

PFAW s Predictable Smear Campaign

The fact that far left groups like NARAL and People for the American Way (PFAW) would smear Judge Roberts with outlandish inaccuracies to advance their political agenda, is hardly newsworthy. Ralph Neas and Company have been railing against the President's nominee before one was even nominated. The only group that should be truly concerned with PFAW s report is the Sierra Club, given how much paper was wasted to print this dishonest and disingenuous report.

Alliance For Justice Joins Other Far-Left Groups In Obligatory Opposition

Alliance For Justice Joins Other Far-Left Groups In Obligatory Opposition To Judge John Roberts

It's hardly surprising that the Alliance for Justice would join PFAW and NARAL in their obligatory opposition to Judge Roberts. Nan Aron first attacked Judge Roberts a mere 27 minutes after he was nominated and today s Alliance for Justice announcement is the continuation of a false smear campaign borne of a political agenda in lock step with the Michael Moore wing of the Democrat party. As the Senate Judiciary Committee prepares for the confirmation hearings next week, one can only hope that Democrats will choose to approach the hearings in a dignified fashion and reject the over-hyped attacks by the far left.

Unprecedented Access to Judge`s Documents

Democrats and third party groups may continue to call for the release of more, more and more information on Judge John Roberts, making it seem as if access to such information is being denied.  However, this is far from the case.  The Washington Times today covers the unprecedented access to information on Judge Roberts in regards to his nomination to the Supreme Court. Specifically, the paper highlights the use of the Web in disclosing information and allowing the American people to make their own evaluation of the nominee.

Judge Roberts "will end up the most-scrutinized Supreme Court selection in history, due in large part to the Internet, which has made it easier to look at his writings and to rally for or against his nomination."  Unlike earlier nominations, "the press is no longer the sole source of information.  This time, senators, lawyers and laymen alike can dissect Judge Roberts' record firsthand and share their thoughts with the world," the Times reports.
